A photography-led refresh of the WordPress website I first built for Calon Bridal Hair in 2019, bringing a growing, sought-after bridal hair business up to date with new wedding imagery, cleaner typography, fresh testimonials and integrated booking.
Calon Bridal Hair is the bridal hair business of Alaw John, an experienced hairstylist from Carmarthenshire who creates timeless, beautifully crafted wedding hair for brides and bridal parties across Gower, Swansea and South West Wales. Calon is the Welsh word for heart, and it sums up the warm, caring approach Alaw brings to every wedding morning.
I first designed and built Alaw’s website back in 2019, and it has been looked after and kept up to date ever since. Over those years, Calon Bridal Hair has grown into a much-loved name in the South Wales wedding scene, with a large client base and a steady stream of professional photographs from the bridal previews and weddings she has styled.
The website was still doing its job, but it had started to look its age. It was time for a refresh that would let Alaw’s work take centre stage and reflect the established, high-end business she has built.
Client: Alaw John, Calon Bridal Hair
Industry: Bridal Hair & Wedding Services
Location: Carmarthenshire, Gower & Swansea, South West Wales
Platform: WordPress & Elementor
Project type: Website Refresh (original build 2019)
Focus: Photography Showcase, Typography, Brand Colours, Testimonials, SEO, Booking
Device optimised: Desktop, Tablet & Mobile
Rather than starting again from scratch, Alaw needed a thoughtful refresh that kept everything her clients already knew and trusted, while bringing the look and feel up to date with where her business is now.
The refresh needed to:
I refreshed the existing WordPress site with new page templates and a design that puts Alaw’s bridal work front and centre, while keeping the structure familiar for returning visitors and clients.
Working through Alaw’s professional wedding and preview photography, I selected the strongest images and placed them throughout the site, from the homepage hero to the gallery, services and blog. The new templates give each photograph room to breathe, so brides can see the detail in every braid, curl and veil placement.
The original decorative script font had served the brand well, but it could be hard to read, especially on mobile. I simplified the fonts across the site, choosing an elegant display font for headings paired with a clean body font. The result feels more confident and modern, and is far easier to read and more accessible for every visitor.
Alaw’s soft dusky rose and cool grey tones were already well recognised, so I kept them as the foundation and introduced a complementary variation to the palette. This gives the refreshed design more depth and flexibility while staying true to the brand clients know.
Glowing reviews are one of Alaw’s biggest assets, so I added fresh testimonials from recent brides to both the homepage and the dedicated reviews page. They speak to exactly what couples want to know: that she is talented, calm and a reassuring presence on the wedding morning.
Alongside the design work, I made a series of SEO improvements, including refreshed page titles and meta descriptions focused on Gower, Swansea and Carmarthenshire, a clearer heading structure, and descriptive filenames and alt text for the new wedding photography.
Alaw’s booking forms are integrated directly into the website, with clear “Check My Date” calls to action throughout. Brides can check availability and send the details Alaw needs in one step, without leaving the site.
The refreshed Calon Bridal Hair website now reflects the established, in-demand business Alaw has built over more than a decade in the wedding industry.
The refreshed website:
Because Alaw’s website has been looked after since 2019, it was in good shape underneath. That meant we could focus the refresh on what really mattered: her updated image from the wedding photographers she works alongside, her brand and her clients’ experience. A well-maintained website doesn’t need to be thrown away every few years; sometimes a thoughtful refresh is all it takes to bring it right back up to date.
